SEAI Solar Grant 2026

Up to €1,800 back
from the Irish government

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers grants of up to €1,800 to help Irish homeowners install solar PV panels. Every home built before 2021 qualifies — but you must use an SEAI-registered installer.

The grant is paid directly to your installer, reducing your upfront cost. With electricity prices around €0.34/kWh and the export payment scheme, most Irish homes pay back their solar investment in 5-7 years.

Important: SEAI grant rates are reviewed annually. Use our calculator to get the current exact amount for your system size.

Three installers had quoted me for a 6kWp system but MyGrantCheck showed I only needed 4kWp. Saved me €2,500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about
Irish solar grants

Real answers to the most common SEAI grant questions from Irish homeowners.

How much is the SEAI solar grant in 2026?

The SEAI Solar PV Grant offers up to €1,800 in 2026. Calculated at €700/kWp for the first 2kWp and €200/kWp for additional capacity up to 4kWp. A 4kWp system receives the full €1,800.

Is solar worth it in Ireland in 2026?

For most Irish homes with south, south-east or south-west facing roofs, solar panels pay back in 5-7 years and save €1,000-€1,400/year. After payback, you get free electricity for 20+ years. Use our calculator to check your specific home.

Do I qualify for the SEAI solar grant?

You qualify if: your home was built and occupied before 31 December 2020, you are the property owner, and you use an SEAI-registered installer. Our calculator checks eligibility based on your inputs.

How long does the SEAI grant take?

From application to payment typically takes 6-12 weeks. Grant approval: 1-2 weeks. ESB Networks NC6 form: 4 weeks. Installation: 1-2 days. Post-works BER: 1-2 weeks. Grant payout: 2-3 weeks. Your installer handles all paperwork.

How much do solar panels cost in Ireland?

A typical 4kWp system costs €7,500-€10,000 before grants. After the €1,800 SEAI grant, your net cost is typically €5,700-€8,200. Always get 3 quotes from SEAI-registered installers.

Do solar panels work in cloudy Irish weather?

Yes — solar panels generate from daylight, not direct sunshine. They produce 10-25% of peak output even on overcast days. Ireland averages 1,400 sunshine hours/year — enough for genuine savings. German homes (same latitude) have 3 million solar installations.

Is MyGrantCheck really free?

Yes — 100% free for homeowners, forever. No sign-up, no payment, no upsells. We're funded by SEAI-registered installers who pay a small fee when you choose to be matched with them — meaning we have zero incentive to oversell.
